Queensbury ‘A’ 24 Silsden
very nearly came away with a point from their visit to Queensbury as Andy
Bowness made a break down the middle of the pitch but was brought down short of
the line and in the following play of the ball debutant Craig Albone was unable
to break the defence as the whistle blew. The
game started with Silsden playing down the hill and with the strong wind in
their favour. Following an initial
period where both sides weighed each other up Silsden opened the scoring as Man
of the Match Matt Horne opened up the Queensbury defence to score.
Bowness did well to add the conversion in the gusty conditions.
Shortly afterwards Silsden extended their lead with a penalty, again from
the boot of Bowness. This was a hard
tackling encounter with neither side having dominance.
Outstanding defensive performances from James Doherty, John
Willians, debutant Lee Shaw and top tackler Jon Gwilliam kept the home side at
bay. But Queensbury kept adding the
pressure and eventually crossed the Silsden line to bring the score to 6 – 8
at half time. After
the interval Queensbury came out the better side making full use of the slope
and the wind at their backs. A quick
try from Queensbury edged them in to the lead but Silsden dug deep and came back
with a break up the hill, finished off by Stevie Holmes in the corner.
Bowness was unable to make the conversion against the wind bringing the
score level at 12 a piece. Queensbury
hit back hard with two tries in reasonably quick succession leaving Silsden with
a difficult task to get back in the game. However
Silsden kept on plugging away and were rewarded with a late try but this
was not enough, the final score finishing at 24-18. Silsden have a two week break now before continuing their campaign
